Revealed: Full UCL, UEL and UECL brackets for new format last 16 draw

The draws for the latter stages of European competition will take on a new twist on Friday after changes to the format this season.

The round of 16, quarter-final and semi-final draws will take place for the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League at UEFA headquarters in Switzerland on Friday afternoon, beginning with the European Cup at 11am  UK time.

But unlike in previous years when all teams involved would expect to see a ball representing their club pulled out of one of UEFA's iconic semi-footballs, only eight balls will be presented in each competition this time around.

That's because of the new 'tennis' style seeding that prevents teams finishing next to one another in the league phase meeting until the final, these are known as seeding pairs.

To take the Champions League as an example, the four seeded pairs are Liverpool and Barcelona - who finished first and second - Arsenal and Inter Milan, Atletico Madrid and Bayer Leverkusen, and Lille and Aston Villa.

These top eight sides from the league phase qualified automatically for the last 16, where they will be joined by the winners of the two-legged knockout out phase play-offs.

On Friday, the clubs in each seeded pair will be drawn into one of two positions, allocating the side of the bracket.

One ball will be taken from the bowl containing the two relevant seeded teams ( e.g. Liverpool and Barcelona) and is opened to display the team. The first team drawn is placed in their spot on the silver side of the bracket, while the other is placed on the corresponding spot on the blue side.

In this example, should Arne Slot's side be displayed first, they will be drawn to play French champions Paris St-Germain, who thrashed compatriots Brest in the play-off round.

The same format will be adopted in the Europa League and Conference, where the likes of Manchester United, Tottenham and Chelsea are hoping for European success.

The Red Devils and Spurs finished the league phase in third and fourth place, meaning they make up a seeded pair in the Europa League and cannot meet until the final.

They will face either Real Sociedad or AZ Alkmaar depending on which side of the bracket they are drawn.

Chelsea, meanwhile, finished the Conference League phase with a perfect record from six matches and topped the standings ahead of Portuguese side Vitoria.

The Blues can face either LaLiga outfit Real Betis or Danish giants FC Copenhagen in the next round.

Seeded teams will play the return matches of the two-legged round of 16 games at home, with the first match-ups set for the first week of March.

However, there is still more to be revealed at Friday's draw in Nyon, with the order of matches in the quarter-final and semi-final needing to be decided in each competition.

Four bowls are prepared for the quarter-final draw, that will immediately follow the round of 16, with two for the silver side of the bracket and two for the blue side of the bracket in the Champions League.

Each bowl contains two balls representing the winners of the round of 16 matches from one rung of the relevant side of the bracket, with the first silver bowl containing slips of paper marked 'Winners R16 1' and 'Winners R16 2' and the second silver bowl 'Winners R16 3' and 'Winners R16 4'.

The first bowl on the blue side will contain slips of paper marked ‘Winners R16 5’ and 'Winners R16 6' and, finally, 'Winners R16 7' and 'Winners R16 8' in the second bowl on the blue side.

The first ball drawn from this bowl indicates the team which will play the first match of the quarter-final at home, and the second ball the team which will play the return leg at home.

This process is repeated for the semi-final draw - with only two bowls prepared - one for the silver side of the bracket with balls containing slips of paper marked 'Winners Q-F 1' and 'Winners Q-F 2', and one for the blue side of the draw containing 'Winners Q-F 3' and 'Winners Q-F 4'.

There is no draw for the final as the winners of the silver side of the bracket will be designated as the home team.

In another change to proceedings this year, teams from the same nation can be drawn against one another in the round of 16.

In the Champions League this could lead to mouth-watering clashes between Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen, and Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid in the last 16.

Teams can also face sides they played in the league phase such as Barcelona and Benfica.
