Sancho to Chelsea saga takes huge twist as MU star 'issues transfer request'

Manchester United are waiting on Chelsea to decide whether they will press ahead with a deal to sign Jadon Sancho permanently with the player also considering his options

Chelsea are thought to be weighing up whether or not to proceed with an obligation to purchase Jadon Sancho. But it is now said that the player himself has his sights set on a spectacular return to Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho, 24, has endured a difficult period since leaving Dortmund to join Manchester United in 2021. The winger has struggled to replicate the form he showed in the Bundesliga and was frozen out at Old Trafford by the club's former manager, Erik ten Hag, before joining Chelsea on loan in the summer.

It was recently revealed that the Blues can go back on their obligation to sign Sancho permanently, provided they are willing to pay the agreed £5million penalty charge.

Sancho's indifferent form for the Blues has led to the ongoing speculation over his future. However, it has now been claimed that Sancho is angling to return to Germany for a THIRD spell at Dortmund.

Bild say that the winger's 'desire' to return to Dortmund, where he spent the second half of last season on loan, is 'growing' by the day. He is also said to have 'submitted a transfer request' to his management in order to move back to Dortmund.

Sancho made his name at Dortmund across a hugely successful four-year spell after opting to leave Manchester City in search of regular first-team football at a young age.

His impressive form in Germany made a return to England all but a foregone conclusion, with Manchester United initially pursuing him in the 2020 summer transfer window. Dortmund's huge £108million valuation of their star winger prevented a deal from being done, though.

News of Chelsea's ability to U-turn on the Sancho deal has sparked a debate over whether Sancho would have a future under Ruben Amorim now the Portuguese coach is in charge at United.

But former Chelsea defender William Gallas is adamant that Sancho simply cannot stay at Stamford Bridge this season - regardless of whether there is scope for him to return to United or not. He told Stadium Astro: "He's a talented player, everybody knows this, but we don't know why he can't perform and can't show what he can do.

"At Dortmund, he was magnificent. At Manchester United it didn't work well for him. He came to Chelsea and at the beginning we saw that Sancho from Dortmund, but then he disappeared.

"I don’t know what the problem is, but at the moment he can’t stay at Chelsea because he has to do more. When you play in the Premier League you have to play every game at the highest level. It’s not easy, but you can’t just play well for a few games and then chill out."
