Match report

Lucien Favre made two changes to the side that beat Augsburg two weeks ago. Paco Alcacer was handed his first league start for the club, while Lukasz Piszczek also made his return to the side. Achraf Hakimi was moved to left back in the absence of the injured Marcel Schmelzer and Abdou Diallo joined Dan Axel Zagadou in the heart of the defense.

Borussia Dortmund began the first half just like they left off before the international break. Jadon Sancho’s deflected shot gave the Black and Yellows the lead in just the third minute. Marco Reus made it 2-0 after a great dummy by Paco Alcacer in the 23rd minute. And the Spaniard got on the scoresheet just two minutes later with a well placed chip after capitalizing on some poor Stuttgart defending.

The Black and Yellows played some sublime football, especially in the first half and were unlucky not to score more, with Paco Alcacer, Marco Reus and Axel Witsel all coming close to finding the net.

Dortmund slowed their intensity in the second half as Lucien Favre decided to give his players a breather before the Atletico game in midweek. That allowed Stuttgart to get into the game, and the home side created some good opportunities, but Roman Burki stood firm to deny them time and time again. Dortmund held firm and got their fourth goal in the 85th minute when substitute Maximilian Philipp scored with a well placed shot from the edge of the box.

The goal meant that Borussia Dortmund have now scored four goals in four consecutive Bundesliga matches for the first time in their history. Lucien Favre will once again be very pleased with his side’s effort. The Black and Yellows controlled the game right from the first minute and made sure that they got the three points to consolidate their lead at the top of the Bundesliga standings.

Next up for Borussia Dortmund is a mouth watering Champions League tie at home to Atletico Madrid on Wednesday.
