AC Milan great Rivera: Guardiola not who Italy need

AC Milan great Gianni Rivera admits he wouldn't like to see Pep Guardiola take charge of Italy.

The Manchester City manager has been mentioned as a potential candidate for the Azzurri job after Rino Gattuso's resignation following the World Cup playoff defeat in Bosnia.

But despite Guardiola's Brescia background, Rivera told AS: "Guardiola? In Italy? No, please. He's not Italian.

"Look, I have no doubt. He has to be Italian. Period. It's logical, because he knows the situation better than others from outside.

"I repeat, you have to choose very carefully. Have sound judgment and be well-informed. No more mistakes, please."

He also said: "We need someone new who understands what this is all about. I insist. A major search is necessary. These names you mention have already, in one way or another, been involved here many times.

"We should prevent their return, because we don't know how they might reason."
