AC Milan open direct talks for Aston Villa's Douglas Luiz

AC Milan have reportedly opened talks to bring Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz to Italy this summer in a deal that could be worth up to £26million.

Luiz has one-year left on his contract at Villa Park but that hasn't stopped the Premier League side demanding a high fee for the player they bought for £15m in 2019.

The Brazilian has impressed during his three years in the Midlands and could now be set for a move to the Serie A champions, according to GOAL.

Milan have opened direct talks with Aston Villa as they attempt to prize away one of Steven Gerrard's key players and Villa look to cash in on their midfielder who could otherwise run his contract down and leave on a free transfer next summer.

The 24-year-old's representatives are confident a deal can be struck between the two clubs with Villa willing to lower their asking price in the hopes of cashing in and acquiring additional transfer funds for Gerrard's summer recruitment drive.

Luiz scored two Premier League goals and registered three assists operating as a defensive midfielder in a Villa side that clambered to 14th in the league standings.

He has become a key figure in Gerrard's rebuild at the club but would prefer a move to a European club playing in the Champions League rather than sign a new deal.

AC Milan finished top of the Serie A table last season as manager Stefano Pioli helped guide the San Siro side to their first league title in 10 years.

The Italian giants are keen to reinforce their midfield this summer following the departure of Franck Kessie, who has made the switch to join Barcelona in Spain.

Diaz could provide the perfect replacement in Milan's midfield as they attempt to mount a successful run in the Champions League next season.

Milan are also interested in signing Chelsea's Hakim Ziyech this summer with the two clubs currently negotiating a move where Ziyech could leave London permanently.
