Aberdeen 2-0 Rangers: Liam Scales' stunning long-range goal inspires Dons to SEVENTH straight win

Liam Scales' stunning long-range goal spurred Aberdeen on to a hard-fought 2-0 victory against Rangers on Sunday at Pittodrie, to extend their winning streak to seven games on the bounce.

Aberdeen came out in the second half of the match, after being dominated by Micheal Beale's side for large parts of the opening 45 minutes, to stun their guests, with two goals inside 17 minutes, with Bojan Miovski doubling the lead less than ten minutes after Scales got the opener.

The Dons have now not conceded a goal in their last four league outings and this win will shore up their position in third place in the league, giving them a five point buffer on Hearts, one place below them.

It was a disappointing day though for Rangers, who will rue their missed chances in the first-half, with Beale's side failing to convert several clear cut chances inside the opening 20 minutes.

Alfredo Morelos' thumping strike was turned wide by the head of Leighton Clarkson before Fashion Sakala skirted away from Mattie Pollock to go one on one with Kelle Roos in goal, but drilled his shot straight into the advancing shot-stopper.

They were presented with another opportunity to go ahead soon after but again failed to capitalise, Borna Barisic receiving a pass from Malik Tillman inside the box before clattering a close-range shot into left-post.

It was a dominant opening 45 from the Gers, who despite not being able to capitalise on their chances, leading Aberdeen at the break with 363 passes to the home side's meagre, 92.

But it was ultimately the home side who would take the spoils.

Barry Robson must have delivered a rousing half-time team talk as his side came out to a whirlwind start in the second term, scoring two goals within 15 miuntes.

Celtic loanee Scales netted the first, in unusual circumstances, gathering the ball on the left wing, before striking what seemed at first to be a long cross into the box but it caught Allan McGregor off guard, and floated past the keeper into the top corner of the net.

It was a stunning effort, that spurred Aberdeen higher up the pitch and they struck again soon after, with Miovski throwing himself onto the end of a looping cross from Clarkson, nodding home to extend the Dons lead to two, even after a VAR check for offside.

Roos was called into action once again, getting a strong hand up to fend off a close effort from James Tavernier before Rabbi Matondo struck the woodwork, again spelling what was a frustrating afternoon for the visitors.

The result means Rangers have failed to cut the gap between them and Celtic, who sit at the top of the Scottish Premiership, to 10 points.

They remain second on 79 points but will take on their rivals in the Scottish Cup semi-final next week at Hampden Park.
