Tammy Abraham is facing a fresh spell on the sidelines after aggravating his recent ankle injury to heap more stress on Chelsea manager Frank Lampard.

Lampard is in the midst of his toughest period since returning to Stamford Bridge as boss in the summer but retains the backing of club chiefs, though a failure to qualify for next season's Champions League could make him vulnerable.

And his concerns mounted yesterday as it emerged Abraham pulled up during the cool-down after Tuesday's 3-0 Champions League loss to Bayern Munich complaining of discomfort in his ankle.

He is facing another spell on the injury list after Sportsmail understands the striker damaged the same ankle that caused him to miss part of this month and was having a series of tests yesterday.

Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski, who scored his club's third goal on Tuesday, is also facing a lay-off of four weeks after fracturing the tibia at his left knee joint during the game.

The England international, having come on as a substitute, pulled up during the cool down of Tuesday's 3-0 Champions League loss to Bayern Munich complaining of discomfort in his ankle.

Sportsmail understands Abraham has irritated the original ankle injury leaving Lampard with an anxious wait for news regarding his star striker.

The 22-year-old was undergoing a series of tests yesterday to determine the extent of the injury - but there are early concerns he could miss a clutch of crucial games, including Chelsea's crucial FA Cup fifth round clash against Liverpool on Tuesday.
