Adam Wharton's future at Crystal Palace looks set for now but he has long been admired at Manchester United who are still looking to bolster their midfielder options
The future looks bright for Adam Wharton as the midfielder continues to impress in the Crystal Palace after lifting the Conference League trophy last night. The Eagles soared to victory thanks to Jean-Philippe Mateta's winner the difference in Istanbul against La Liga side Rayo Vallecano.
The former Blackburn Rovers is a firm favourite at Selhurst Park and is easily one of, if not, the first name on the starting line-up sheet having done so well under Oliver Glasner. But with the Austrian leaving the club on a high note, there is a chance that Wharton could have his head turned with the options available to him, including Manchester United.
Right now though, Palace are comfortably ahead of anyone in the pack to grab their star player's signature with the bookies pricing them at 1/5 firm favourites with BetMGM and VirginBet to maintain his services after the summer transfer window closes in September. However, United see Adam Wharton as “too similar” to Kobbie Mainoo, but could still move for the Crystal Palace midfielder if they decide to sign three midfielders this summer rather than two. As things stand, United are 6/1 to secure the midfielder's services - who has been linked to the club since Ruben Amorim was at the helm, which might explain why the club are moving in a different direction.
United are expected to land Atalanta’s Ederson in a £38m deal as Michael Carrick’s first signing, but Casemiro’s exit and Champions League football mean more additions are likely. Other names linked include Elliot Anderson and Carlos Baleba. According to reports, United admire Wharton’s passing but doubt he’s the right fit alongside Mainoo in Carrick’s 4-2-3-1. Liverpool and Chelsea are also interested.
Wharton, 22, has been celebrating after starring in Palace’s Conference League win over Rayo Vallecano, earning Player of the Match, and said he plans a “big” celebration.
