Ancelotti: Winning honours has to be the dream for Everton and the supporters

Carlo Ancelotti wants to bring the glory days to Everton after sensationally being announced as their new manager on Saturday prior to their clash against Arsenal.

The hugely successful Italian has taken over from caretaker manager Duncan Ferguson at Goodison Park, but he has a huge job on his hands to rediscover Everton's confidence.

The Toffees currently languish in 15th in the Premier League, just four points above the relegation zone, while they are still searching for their first trophy since 1995.

And Ancelotti - in his first interview with the club following his appointment - has outlined his ambitious plans for Everton, who he has described as 'one of the greatest clubs in England'.

'I am excited to be here at one of the greatest clubs in England,' the experienced 60-year-old told Everton's official website.

'I am really excited, I enjoy the place, the team, the club. I am here to try to do my best. This is a club with a lot of ambition, with great history.

'I think a lot of the squad is good. Of course I am here to improve the team and to put better quality in the squad and I try to do my best.

'Our goal is to be competitive in the Premier League, to try to stay at the top of the table, to try to be competitive in Europe. So I think it won't happen straight away but we will have to work for this.'

Ancelotti has also urged the Everton fans to stick with the team as they look to rediscover their mojo after a woeful start to the Premier League season.

Ancelotti, who has managed many European giants in the past - including AC Milan, Chelsea and Real Madrid - takes charge of a team that has already lost nine games in the Premier League.

'The Evertonians have to stay close to the team as they are used to doing. I have a good memory here, or bad for me, because Everton was the only team I didn't beat in my experience in the Premier League and the last game I played in the Premier League was here, so I am happy to be here and come back.

'So to the Evertonian, I would like to say stay close to the team, stay together, because for the players that is really important to have the support of their fans.

'The goal for every team is to be competitive, try to win of course. The goal is to reach the Champions League or the Europa League, to be competitive. Also, winning honours has to be a dream and goal for the club and for the supporters. I am here to try to do this, be competitive.

'There are lots of competitions in England, the FA Cup, the Carabao Cup, so I think that as I said, it takes time. It is not going to happen straight away but working together, we have to try and do it as soon as possible.

'I am always excited to be here. The atmosphere in the Premier League is different from Italian football. I am happy to be here. All the people are really respectful, I would like to stay together with the supporters to work together, to enjoy together. My dream here is to bring success.'

Ancelotti will get down to business straight away with the Toffees as they desperately aim to finish in the top half of the table come the end of the season.

Ancelotti will be determined to get off to a rapid start as Everton manager when they take on Burnley at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Boxing Day.
