Ancelotti fumes after being booked during Real Madrid's Manchester City draw

Carlo Ancelotti expressed his frustration with the referee after being shown a yellow card for his furious reaction during Real Madrid's draw with Manchester City.

Real will bid to secure a spot in the Champions League final in the return leg at the Etihad after neither side could find a winner on Tuesday evening, with Vinicius Jr's first-half thunderbolt cancelled out by Kevin De Bruyne's well-struck equaliser.

De Bruyne had collected possession on the edge of the penalty area shortly after the hour mark and lashed an emphatic effort beyond Thibaut Courtois, although controversy struck with the hosts claiming the ball had gone out of play beforehand.

Footage showed Bernardo Silva controlling the ball on the right flank, with his touch coming directly on the touchline. Ancelotti immediately raised his arms on the edge of his technical area, although City's move was allowed to continue.

From there, Jack Grealish and Ilkay Gundogan combined to tee up De Bruyne, leaving Ancelotti raging. The manager was then booked by official Artur Dias.

Sharing his surprise over the caution, Ancelotti told BT Sport: 'I don't know why. I told [the referee]: "I was not on the pitch, why you give me [the card]?"

'I think he could give the yellow card to the player, not to the manager.'

After City's controversial goal, broadcaster beIN SPORTS shared an 'exclusive' image purporting that the ball had in fact gone out of play before Silva's touch back inside.

Using several TV camera angles, a 3D image was created, although it is not definitive or official. Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger, meanwhile, questioned whether the officials were provided with technology able to offer conclusive proof either way.

'It is a typical situation of do we go [to the VAR]. The VAR normally should check if the goal is regular or not,' Wenger said on beIN SPORTS.

'In a situation like that they have to intervene.

'They did not go far enough back to check if the ball was out or not, or they did not have the potential to check if the ball was out or not.'

City dominated possession for much of the showdown at the Bernabeu, with both teams scoring against the run of play. But despite the semi-final tie remaining finely poised, Ancelotti struck a positive tone when previewing the second leg.

'Defensively we were good, [Antonio] Rudiger against [Erling] Haaland did really well,' he said. 'The midfield covered well the position in front of the defence.

'We are satisfied. Sometimes the result doesn't give you credit, but the performance was really good. We are happy and we have strong motivation for the next game.'
