Andy Gray backs Roberto Martinez to replace Mourinho at Man United

Former Sky Sports pundit Andy Gray has a shock suggestion as to who should replace Jose Mourinho if he leaves Manchester United - Roberto Martinez.

Mourinho is under pressure at United after losing two of his opening three Premier League fixtures, including a heavy 3-0 loss at home to Tottenham on Monday night.

The Portuguese boss, known to be unhappy that key transfer targets were not signed in the summer, later stormed out of his press conference demanding respect after being questioned over the defeat.

Speaking on Bein Sport, presenter Richard Keys said of Mourinho: 'I think his time is done at Manchester United.

'They are a club in crisis, I don't think players want to play for him and players don't want to go there. The football they play is not exciting.'

Keys then suggested that former Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane should take over at Old Trafford if Mourinho leaves - but was accused by pundit Gray of 'just plucking a name.'

Challenged to come up with an alternative, Gray then said: 'I'll give you another name, and you might laugh at me - Roberto Martinez'.

There followed stunned silence in the studio, before Keys said: 'I'm not going to laugh at you, I'm speechless.'

Martinez impressed in the summer as he led Belgium to a best-ever third place finish at the 2018 World Cup, having previously coached Wigan and Everton in the Premier League.

However his teams, especially Everton, were criticised for defensive fragility - something United displayed on Monday night as they were picked apart in the second half by Spurs.
