Emiliano Martinez has shared a photo of his new tattoo of the FIFA World Cup Trophy on his leg to commemorate Argentina's victory in Qatar.

The Aston Villa goalkeeper played every minute as Lionel Scaloni's side recovered from a shock opening game defeat to Saudi Arabia to ultimately defeat holders France in the final and lift the sport's most coveted trophy for the third time.

Martinez earned his place in Argentinian footballing folklore with his heroics in the World Cup final penalty shootout, though the manner of his celebrations after victory was secured drew a mixed response.

In tribute to the team's win the stopper shared a photo to his Instagram story of himself getting a tattoo of the famous trophy.

The 30-year-old added a caption thanking the artist for his work: 'Thank you for tattooing this wonder.'

Martinez's artwork depicts the iconic trophy below three stars marking each of Argentina's triumphs in the competition, with a phrase below that reads: 'May passion lead you to glory.'

Angel Di Maria scored Argentina's second goal during the dramatic final win over France in Qatar, and also commemorated the occasion by getting a large tattoo of the trophy on his thigh.

Earlier this week Crystal Palace boss Patrick Vieira slammed Martinez for his jubilant celebrations following Argentina's triumph on spot kicks.

'When you are talking about the abuse and the comments that he received after the World Cup, I think that is damaging the game and himself,' the former Arsenal star explained.

'Some of the pictures that I saw from the Argentina goalkeeper took away a little bit from what Argentina achieved at the World Cup. I don't think that they really needed that.

'You can't control sometimes people's emotions or decisions, but that was a stupid decision from Martinez to do that.'
