Arsenal and Man Utd target Gabriel Magalhaes 'makes transfer decision'

Gabriel Magalhaes has reportedly decided he who wants to join this summer as Arsenal and Manchester United do battle for his signature.

Lille centre-back Gabriel has attracted the attention of a number of clubs, with Napoli and Everton also interested in his services.

The 22-year-old Brazilian played 24 of Lille's 28 Ligue 1 games in the season just gone, helping the club finish fourth in France's top flight.

United are looking for a top-class defensive partner for Harry Maguire, while Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta is believed to be in the market for left-footed centre-back.

And according to a report from Lille-based publication La Voix du Nord, via Metro, Gabriel has put one club at the top of his list.

The report states that the left-footed defender prizes a move to the Gunners after being impressed by the club's pitch when representatives made contact with him earlier this week.

However, United could still convince Gabriel, who is expected to cost €30million (£27.1m) - although the French publication rules Napoli out of the race.

Everton's interest has reportedly cooled off somewhat, despite reports they were close to signing him in a £20m deal earlier this year, with the centre-back even having visited their training ground before lockdown.

Paris-Saint Germain are also believed to be interested in Gabriel, who has impressed alongside Jose Fonte in Lille’s defence.

United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reportedly told Nathan Ake last month that he "needed a left-footed centre-back" - before the defender switched to neighbours Manchester City.

One defender United should make a move for is Jan Vertonghen, according to his former Tottenham teammate Jermaine Jenas.

Vertonghen, 33, is a free agent after his Spurs contract expired at the end of last month.

"I keep touting him around everywhere but I’m sorry, Jan Vertonghen on a free is the best free transfer centre half out there," Jenas told BBC Radio 5 Live.

"If you can get Harry Maguire back on the right side and get an actual ball-playing centre-half as a left-sider, that little dynamic may change things for them as well and he’s free.

"Manchester United will know what they’re doing, they'll have a plan but defensively they’re miles off it."

Jenas added: "I know how good he is. It baffles me when I see him in the stand every week because I know how good he this player is.

"I’ve played with him, I’ve watched him and on a free transfer, it just makes sense."
