Arsenal fans question Xhaka & ask whether he even said sorry

Arsenal fans have been left divided after Granit Xhaka issued a statement following his spat with supporters during the draw to Crystal Palace.

Xhaka had been hauled off in the draw with Roy Hodgson's side at the Emirates last Sunday, and promptly stole the headlines after telling home fans to 'f*** off' after they jeered him off.

He also cupped his ear while heading towards the touchline, and took his shirt off in frustration before storming down the tunnel at the Emirates.

The Switzerland international has since penned a statement on social media, breaking the silence following the controversial incident last Sunday.

Xhaka revealed in his message that he had received 'repeated abusive comments at matches and on social media' over the last couple of weeks, which were horrifically directed at him and his loved ones.

Xhaka admitted he let himself get 'carried away and reacted in a way that disrespected the group of fans that support our club, our team and myself', before insisting he was 'sorry' for his actions on Sunday.

But the midfielder's statement has been met by a range of different opinions, with some backing the captain while others claimed he didn't apologise.

One fan wrote: 'Xhaka's statement doesn't feel like an apology to me. Yes, he might get nasty comments on social media. Actually, no. He WILL get nasty comments on social media. He has millions of followers, that's the modern game. But he's not really apologised to all the genuine supporters?'

Another added: 'Xhaka's message was not an apology, it's a story. He still has a lot to do regardless of any forms of criticism he's received in the past. That's the price you pay for being a big club's captain.'

Others also felt Xhaka failed to issue an apology, with one claiming: 'I don't see an apology for disrespecting the badge and throwing the shirt on the floor.'

However, others took a much more lenient approach and backed the Arsenal skipper as they hope for a quick resolve to the tricky situation.

An Arsenal fan wrote on Twitter: 'We're with you Granit. Pick that captains armband back up and lead us to victory. We're in together!'

Another said on social media: 'Understood and respected. We move on and try to fix this mess with immediate effect. We need leaders not cry babies. Everyone needs to pull together asap.'

And finally, one supporter told the 27-year-old to keep his 'head up', before claiming 'anyone in your position would have acted in the similar way.'
