Arsenal 'interested in signing Samuel Umtiti' as Barcelona exit nears

French defender Samuel Umtiti is set to leave Barcelona in the summer and could be heading to Arsenal, according to reports.

Umtiti has been angling for a move away from the Catalan giants in recent years and looks to be finally getting his wish.

The Cameroon-born 28-year-old has made only one appearance for Barcelona this season and missed three months of the campaign with a fractured toe.

According to the Daily Star, Umtiti could be offered to Arsenal in the upcoming window, with manager Mikel Arteta reportedly interesting in bringing the player to the Emirates Stadium.

It is thought Arsenal have long admired Umtiti, a World Cup winner with France in 2018, and nearly signed the centre-back on loan in January.

Umtiti joined Barcelona from Lyon for around £25million in 2016 and enjoyed a superb start to his career at Camp Nou before his stay in Spain was blighted by injuries.

He has played 133 times for the Spanish club, scoring two goals.

Barca are believed to be willing to let Umtiti go because of concerns over his fitness and Arsenal could be in the market for a defender amid doubts over the future of William Saliba.

Saliba has spent the past season on loan with Marseille in France, but is set to return to Arsenal when the campaign ends.

He has refused to rule out the possibility of staying at Marseille, though, after flourishing at the club and receiving the Ligue 1 young player of the year award.

'It's an honour, a source of pride. I dedicate this trophy to my team-mates, my club and the supporters,' Saliba said at Sunday's awards ceremony in Paris.

'Did I play my last match with OM? I don't know. The future will tell us.

'The most important thing is to confirm this good season by qualifying for the Champions League. Afterwards, we'll see.'
