Arsenal legend David Seaman says club MUST back Mikel Arteta in the transfer market

David Seaman has urged the Arsenal board to give Mikel Arteta the necessary funds in the transfer market - claiming that if they don't back the Spaniard, he may 'not hang around for too long'.

Arsenal ended a nightmare domestic season - in which they finished eighth in the Premier League - on a real high after lifting their 14th FA Cup by overcoming London rivals Chelsea 2-1 at Wembley in the final.

Despite the turbulent campaign, Arteta has hugely impressed during his opening months as manager at Arsenal, beating Liverpool late on in the Premier League while triumphing over Manchester City and then Chelsea to seal FA Cup glory for the club.

And Arsenal legend Seaman, who won three league titles, four FA Cups and the European Cup Winners' Cup with the club, has since hailed Arteta as a 'great manager' before pleading with the board to back him in the transfer market and do everything they can to tie down Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to a new deal.

'If the board realise how good a manager we've got, then we really need to back him,' Seaman told The Gary Newbon Sports Show.

'He will obviously have ideas of players that he wants to come in and who he wants to get out, but the board have got to back him. Because if they don't, Arsenal will just be doing what they're doing.

'They've been top six, this season we've been top eight, Tottenham have finished above us again. That's not good enough for Arsenal and if we got beat on Saturday, that's a really bad season.

'But because we have got into Europe, hopefully it means players will come to us. But the board need to back Arteta because he is a great manager and I am sure that if they don't, he might not hang around for too long.'

Arsenal have been linked with the likes of Philippe Coutinho on loan and Thomas Partey from Atletico Madrid while they look to secure a free transfer for Chelsea forward Willian.

But while there is plenty of talk about arrivals at the Emirates in the upcoming transfer window, there is huge uncertainty over the future of star man and captain Aubameyang.

Aubameyang, who scored both goals in the FA Cup final last weekend, could be on his way out of the club with his contract expiring next summer with the likes of Barcelona having previously shown interest.

But former goalkeeper Seaman has also pleaded with the Gunners hierarchy to make the 31-year-old an offer he simply can't refuse, just like they did by making Mesut Ozil their highest-paid player on £350,000-per-week in January 2018.

When asked whether he thinks Aubameyang will stay, Seaman replied: 'I hope he does because where else are we going to be able to buy one of those players of that quality. You know it's going to cost them a lot of money.

'So make him an offer he can't refuse. They did it with Ozil, so why not do it with our best player.

'It's vitally important that they keep players like him and then still add onto the squad because it still needs strengthening no doubt.

'He is looking at his last contract realistically, he is 31, and if he gets a three or four year deal he is going to be set. So it's vitally important.'
