Arsenal legend Parlour explains why Wenger was 'awful' on the training ground

Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has described his former manager Arsene Wenger as 'awful', but he wasn't talking about his managerial qualities.

Parlour played under the guidance of the Frenchman for 8 years, during which time he won three Premier League titles and three FA Cups.

He was also part of the invincibles squad of 2003/04, before leaving for Middlesbrough the following summer.

Having worked with Wenger for so long, there was one area that Parlour has admitted that his manager didn't excel in.

"He wasn't a player," he told TalkSPORT. "Everybody expects someone to be half decent when they're managers, got an eye for a ball, but he was awful.

"He tried to join in sometimes and you know in a playground when you don't want to pick someone and the same person is always last, he would always be the last person picked.

"We wanted to win that game and if he was on our team we were always less favourites to win the game."

Despite his apparent lack of ability on the pitch, Parlour insists that his boss didn't take any offence at any jokes made at his expense.

"He was a character, though, Arsene Wenger," Parlour added. "He was such a funny character and he always laughed at himself.

"When he made a big mistake he didn’t take it to heart.

"If we started giggling, he would sort of laugh as well.

"He was never a football player but what a great manager he was to play under."

Wenger had a short playing career, making just four appearances at Centre-back for French club RC Strasbourg.
