Arsenal vs Chelsea: Who is better equipped to finish inside the top four?

  /  autty

Unai Emery's Arsenal and Maurizio Sarri's Chelsea meet at the Emirates Stadium with six points between them in the Premier League.

Arsenal are on 41, while Chelsea are on 47, with neither really in the race for the title like Liverpool and Manchester City.

What they are chasing, however, is a Champions League spot. One may make it and the other may miss out. Here, ahead of Saturday evening's clash, Sportsmail has examined who is better equipped to finish in the top four.

DEFENCE

In November 2018, Emery said Arsenal had lost defensive structure under Arsene Wenger.

It was more of an observation than a pop at his predecessor, but Emery has struggled to strike a balance between defence and attack too.

No club in the Premier League's Big Six have conceded more than Arsenal's 32 and their 5-1 loss to Liverpool in December brought back memories of Wenger's final season.

It does not help that Arsenal have a tendency to shoot themselves in the foot.

They have committed a league-high 18 errors leading to shots, and conceded seven of those. Injuries have hampered Emery, too. The injury to Rob Holding, who is out for up to nine months, hurt him in particular while Laurent Koscielny is still trying to regain full fitness.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are laughing. They have conceded as many goals as Manchester City and, considering it is his first season in England, 24-year-old goalkeeper Kepa has slotted in nicely.

David Luiz has impressed this term, too, with the centre back's contract expiring at the end of this season. By a landslide, Chelsea win the battle of the defences.

TRANSFERS

Emery is a coach who gives little away at his press conferences but last week, the Spaniard admitted something rather alarming about Arsenal's piggy bank. He said the north London club cannot sign players permanently because their finances are so stretched.

With the likes of Mesut Ozil on £350,000-a-week, despite the World Cup winner not being an automatic starter, loans are their only option.

Accountancy giants Deloitte show Arsenal have the sixth-highest revenue in world football (£419m, compared to Chelsea's £367.8m) but Emery's hands are tied. Sarri's aren't.

Chelsea are set to make a significant show of support for the Italian in this window by bringing in 31-year-old Gonzalo Higuain on loan. Sarri has wanted the striker since he first arrived in the summer but his age contradicts Chelsea's over-30s policy. Despite that, they are backing their boss.

Alvaro Morata is to be shown the door as a result, while Chelsea are still considering Leandro Paredes of Zenit St Petersburg as a replacement for Cesc Fabregas.

So Sarri's side are the ones making waves in the transfer window, while Emery's Arsenal are up the creek without a paddle.

WINNERS: Chelsea

STRIKERS

As mentioned, Chelsea are in the midst of trying to solve their striker woes by bringing in Higuain, who scored 36 goals in 35 games under Sarri in Serie A in 2015-16.

Whether the former Napoli forward can hit the ground running remains to be seen. His latest record for AC Milan in Italy reads one goal in his last eight league games.

When it comes to Chelsea's current striker statistics, Morata and Olivier Giroud are put to shame by Eden Hazard, who has occasionally been asked to act as a false nine. The Chelsea trio have created 80 chances between them, but Hazard has contributed 58 of those alone. He has scored 10 of their 16 goals, and got 10 of their 14 assists.

The arrival of Higuain – a striker Sarri finally trusts – should see Morata leave for Italy and Hazard move back to his preferred position on the wing. So here, we have based our decision on traditional strikers only, leaving it as Higuain and Giroud versus Aubameyang and Lacazette.

In that scenario, Arsenal come out on top. Daft handshakes and dances aside, Aubameyang and Lacazette have scored 14 and seven goals respectively.

Sarri will hope Higuain can start scoring immediately but Emery cannot ask for much more from his firing forwards.

WINNERS: Arsenal

MANAGERS

Both bosses came to the Premier League with their own styles of play.

Much has been made of 'Sarri-ball', though Chelsea's head coach has been criticised for a lack of a Plan B when it does not work. When an opponent manages to limit Jorginho's influence, like Tottenham did during their 3-1 win in November, can Sarri's system work without its pass master pulling the strings?

Emery has work to do too, with his Arsenal side clicking at the front but not at the back. He readily admits his team are one in transition.

'The idea is to get Arsenal back to where the club deserves to be,' the Spaniard said this week, 'but it needs time.' Patience is a rarity in the pressure cooker that is modern-day football because success is a must. In that department, there is only one winner between these two managers.

Emery won three Europa Leagues with Sevilla in succession, while he also won Ligue 1 with Paris Saint-Germain, along with other domestic French trophies. Sarri has yet to lift a trophy, so Emery's experience has Arsenal better equipped for the fight.

WINNERS: Arsenal

X FACTOR

An unusual category but a valid one. Who has that X Factor? Which club can pull a win out of the bag because they have that special talent in their team?

In the past, you might say Arsenal have Mesut Ozil, who can destroy defences with a single pass on his day. Now, the German is struggling to get in the starting line-up.

Juventus-bound Aaron Ramsey has his moments, too, though Aubameyang and Lacazette are undoubtably the two most exciting figures in Emery's side. Yet the winners of this category are Chelsea. Why? Because they have Hazard.

No one in the Premier League has created more chances than the Belgian's 58, while no one has completed as many dribbles either.

Willian does not do enough in front of goal but managed to grab the winner against Newcastle last week. Sarri also has Pedro, who scored after a splendid 60-yard ball from centre back Luiz.

It is Hazard who carries that X Factor in Sarri's side, however, and he tilts the scales in Chelsea's favour over Arsenal here.
