Aston Villa are expected to announce former Liverpool and Chelsea managing director Christian Purslow as their new chief executive.

The 54-year-old former Cambridge University and Harvard graduate played a pivotal role at Liverpool, renegotiating a £350m loan and opening the door for current owners Fenway Sports to take over from Tom Hicks and George Gillett.

He joined Chelsea in 2014 as head of global commercial activities and oversaw a number of deals including tie-ups with Nike, Yokohama, Wipro and Carabao.

Purslow left Stamford Bridge in 2017 and has since been working in the media.

Villa want a new chief executive to replace Keith Wyness who was suspended in June and is understood to be pursuing a case for constructive dismissal.

The Midlands club are currently fourth in the Championship table after a strong start to the new season.
