Jose Mourinho has confirmed that Gareth Bale missed Tottenham's match with Crystal Palace on Sunday due to the 'flu' but confirms the illness is not coronavirus.

The Welsh winger was left out of Spurs' matchday squad for the trip to Selhurst Park due to illness and the 31-year-old tested for the virus and the result came back negative.

Mourinho claimed that Bale is not feeling well at all and was not in a condition to be risked for Sunday's match.

The Portuguese manager told Sky Sports on Sunday: 'He (Bale) doesn't feel very well.

'Of course I want to say it's not Covid. Not Covid. He's been tested, no chance. But it's kind of a flu. It's a kind of a feeling, he's not feeling so well.'

Bale made his Tottenham return after a mixed spell at Spanish giants Real Madrid but has played just three times in the Premier League since rejoining the north Londoners.

The Wales international has, however, played in every single Europa League game for Mourinho's side this season as he competes for a starting spot at Spurs.

Mourinho elected to pick Steven Bergwijn and Son Heung-Min alongside Harry Kane in the front three on Sunday, the fourth game in a row where the trio have played together.

Meanwhile, Bale's place in the Tottenham squad on Sunday was taken by Dele Alli, who made Mourinho's matchday roster for the first time since the beginning of October.

Alli has been exiled by Mourinho this season and has been linked with a January move to Paris Saint-Germain on loan.

Mourinho's side travelled to Crystal Palace on Sunday looking to regain top spot in the Premier League after a positive start to the season.

Spurs are unbeaten in the Premier League since the opening day of the season defeat to Everton and started the weekend level on points with last season's champions Liverpool, though Tottenham have a better goal difference.
