Balotelli, Robinho, Boateng... What happened to players sold by Mancini at City?

  /  autty

Roberto Mancini offloaded plenty of players during his time in charge of Manchester City.

Here, we take a look at those who headed for the exit door – but brought in a transfer fee of more than £100million…

Mario Balotelli (sold to AC Milan, January 2013, £18million)

Probably the most high-profile of departures during Mancini's tenure, the pair had a much publicised argument on the training ground shortly before Balotelli's move to Milan was announced. The striker returned to the Premier League after 18 months to spend a season with Liverpool – and then headed back to Milan on loan. He joined Nice on a free transfer in August 2016, switching to Marseille in January 2019. Still not yet 30, he signed for Brescia in August 2019, scoring five goals in his 19 appearances for them so far.

Robinho (sold to AC Milan, August 2010, £16.2million)

The winger's time at City was marred by injury, meaning he fell out of favour when it came to Mancini's squad. He spent four years at AC Milan before being loaned out to home club Santos – as he had been at City. In July 2015, he headed to China on a free transfer for six months, representing GZ Evergrande, then joined Atletico-MG back in Brazil. Now in Turkey, the 36-year-old is still a first-team regular for Basaksehir, having spent a season previously with Sivasspor.

Jerome Boateng (sold to Bayern Munich, July 2011, £12.15million)

Used almost entirely at full-back during his time at Manchester City, the centre-half is coming up on nine years at Bayern Munich now, with over 300 appearances there.

Adam Johnson (sold to Sunderland, August 2012, £11.34million)

The midfielder was at Sunderland when he was charged and convicted of grooming and sexual activity with an underage girl. He was released from prison after serving half of his six-year sentence.

Stephen Ireland (sold to Aston Villa, August 2010, £8.72million)

Mancini had been critical of Ireland's mindset, and it was inevitable that he would be shipped out – moving to Aston Villa in a part-exchange deal for James Milner. The midfielder didn't really settle at Villa, with loan moves at a number of clubs, including Newcastle. He eventually made a permanent move to Stoke City in January 2014 on a free transfer, leaving in July 2018. He spent three months at Bolton from October 2018, and is currently without a club.

Emmanuel Adebayor (sold to Tottenham, August 2012, £5.76million)

The striker flitted in and out of City under Mancini on a variety of loan moves, but finally left permanently when he signed for Spurs in the summer of 2012, spending three years there. He was without a club for a few months before signing for Crystal Palace in January 2016, leaving there six months later. He moved to Turkey in January 2017, spending time at Basaksehir then Kayserispor. Now aged 36, he signed for Olimpia in Paraguay in February 2020.

Nedum Onuoha (sold to QPR, December 2011, £4.23million)

The centre-back spent six years at Loftus Road before his release in July 2018. Two months later, he signed for Salt Lake in the MLS, where he is still playing.

Shaun Wright-Phillips (sold to QPR, July 2011, £4.05million)

After four years at QPR, the winger moved to America, first spending two years with the New York Red Bulls, then moving to Arizona United, followed by Phoenix Rising. Now aged 38, he retired last summer.

Shay Given (sold to Aston Villa, July 2011, £3.38million)

The Irish international spent most of his career in England, moving on to Middlesbrough and Stoke City after the end of his second term with Villa. Now retired, he is the goalkeeping coach at Derby County.

Nigel de Jong (sold to AC Milan, August 2012, £3.15million)

Notorious for his chest-high challenge on Xabi Alonso in the 2010 World Cup final, the Dutch international spent four years in Italy before his high-profile move across the Atlantic to LA Galaxy. He joined Galatasaray in August 2016, and has also had short stays at FSV Mainz 05 in the Bundesliga and Al Ahli in Qatar. He is now at Al Shahania in the Qatar Stars League.

Javier Garrido (sold to Lazio, June 2010, £2.25million)

The left back returned to the Premier League with Norwich, first on loan and then on a permanent transfer in the summer of 2013. Since leaving Carrow Road on a free transfer, he has spent time at Las Palmas, AEK Larnaca, and is currently at Real Union.

Valeri Bojinov (sold to Parma, June 2010, £1.8million)

The striker has been thoroughly nomadic since leaving City, with spells in Portugal with Sporting Lisbon, in Italy with Lecce, Hellas Verona, Vicenza and Ternana, and in his homeland of Bulgaria with Botev Vratsa and Levski Sofia. Now 34, he has just signed for Pescara back in Italy.

Vladimir Weiss (sold to Pescara, August 2012, £1.62million)

After a year in Italy with Pescara, the winger headed to Greece to join Olympiacos on a free transfer. He spent six months there before moving to Qatar, with two years at Al Duhail followed by four years at Al Gharafa. He signed for Slovan Bratislava in February 2020.
