Barcelona actively seeking Coutinho transfer to avoid huge Liverpool settlement

Barcelona are desparate to offload Philippe Coutinho before he reaches the landmark of 100 appearances for the club, according to reports in Spain.

The Brazilian playmaker moved to Camp Nou from Liverpool in January 2018 in a deal worth a total of €160million (£142m).

This sum was made up of a €120million (£105m) initial fee and €40million (£35m) in add-ons, of which Barcelona have already paid €10million (£9m) after qualifying for the Champions League in both of Coutinho's first two seasons with the club.

Barca also paid €5million (£4m) after the 28-year-old made his 25th appearance for the club - and they are faced with a substantial payment when he plays his 100th game.

Liverpool will be owed €20million when Coutinho reaches a century of appearances for Barcelona, but the cash-strapped Catalans are desparate to avoid making this payment, according to  Mundo Deportivo  .

The player has made 90 appearances so far, 14 of which came this season before he suffered a ruptured meniscus in December.

Coutinho - who has just over two years remaining on his contract - is likely to return from injury in April, when fewer than 10 games could remain this season.

The report adds Barcelona will look to offload him this summer, with another loan move a possibility if a permanent exit cannot be secured.

Coutinho spent last season on loan at Bayern Munich and helped the Bavarians clinch the treble, but the club chose not to pursue a permanent transfer.

Meanwhile, the other €5million-worth of add-ons owed to Liverpool will be due if Coutinho wins the Champions League with Barcelona.

Ronald Koeman's side crashed out of the competition at the last-16 stage at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain earlier this month.

Although Coutinho won the Champions League with Bayern last season, Barcelona were not required to make the payment.

In a similar vein, the 38 games he played for the German club did not contribute to his overall tally of appearances for Barcelona.
