Barnsley head coach Daniel Stendel has left the club with immediate effect.

The south Yorkshire club sit second bottom of the Championship table having won just one of their 11 league matches so far this season.

German manager Stendel, who led Barnsley back into the second tier as runners-up to Luton Town last season, has found life far tougher at the higher level.

A club statement issued on Tuesday morning read: 'Barnsley Football Club confirms that it has separated from Daniel Stendel with immediate effect. Adam Murray has been appointed caretaker manager.'

They lost 5-1 at Preston North End on Saturday and are currently two points adrift of safety in the Championship table.

The team hasn't won since the opening day of the Championship season when they defeated Fulham 1-0 and they have lost all but three of their 11 matches since.
