Bayern boss Tuchel angrily responds to Arsenal ref's awkward penalty admission

Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel was furious after his side were not given a penalty for handball in their 2-2 draw with Arsenal in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final clash.

With Bayern leading Arsenal 2-1, they appealed for a spot kick after what appeared to be an innocuous incident involving David Raya and Gabriel. After referee Glenn Nyberg blew his whistle to restart the game, Gabriel handled the ball after receiving a pass from Raya.

The Brazilian appeared to be unaware that the ball was in play and, despite vociferous appeals from Bayern, Nyberg decided not to award a penalty. Speaking after the game, Tuchel claimed that Nyberg had admitted he made a mistake but felt he should not punish Arsenal for a "kid's mistake" in such a big game.

"It was a bit tough, I felt like a lot, a lot of little decisions against us," Tuchel fumed. "I felt a bit of a push from the crowd, which was a fantastic crowd. And, for me, and for all of us he did a huge mistake in not giving a penalty.

"I know it's crazy situation but they put the ball down, he whistles, they give the ball free and the defender takes the ball in his hand. What makes us really angry is the explanation on the field.

"He [the referee] told our players that it's a kid's mistake and he will not give a penalty like this in a quarter-final. This is a horrible, horrible explanation because that means he's judging our handballs. Kid's mistake, adult's mistake, or whatever.

"We feel angry because it's a huge decision against us but okay, it's 2-2, things are now totally even and we have a second leg to play and we hope we can create the same atmosphere and play with the same intensity and passion like today to create the same atmosphere in our stadium and push things in our direction."

Both Joshua Kimmich and Thomas Muller echoed Tuchel's comments, with Kimmich insisting: "I've never seen something like that before. Ref said 'kid's mistake'. It's not, it's a clear penalty."

Muller added: "The ref saw what happened clearly but felt it was too stupid a mistake, too small to give a pen. I can understand that in terms of the game but it's not down to him to decide that."

Bayern's sporting director Max Eberl also fumed: "The referee blows his whistle, the goalkeeper passes the ball to the defender, who takes it with his hand, that's a penalty. The referee said I can't give such a penalty in the quarter-finals. Excuse me. It's not my fault, it's not our fault."
