Renato Sanches made a goalscoring return to Benfica on Wednesday night and the midfielder was given a round of applause from the supporters in front of whom he made his name.

Bayern kicked off their Champions League campaign with a victory in Portugal, Robert Lewandowski opening the scoring early on before Sanches sealed the victory in the second half.

It was a special moment for the 21-year-old, who has struggled since leaving Benfica for the German giants in a deal worth £27.5m back in 2016.

Sanches, who endured a nightmare loan spell, was handed a rare start against his former club and made the most of it.

The youngster started and finished a fine counter-attack to put his side in firm control of the match, ending his two-year goalscoring drought in the process.

And despite watching their team go further behind, the Benfica fans made sure to show their respect to the player, who spent over 10 years on the club's books.

Having smashed the ball in the net, Sanches immediately held his hands above his head as if pleading for forgiveness.

The home support responded to the subdued celebration, breaking into a unified round of applause before the midfielder acknowledged the gesture of good will by clapping back.

Sanches joined Benfica at the age of nine in 2006 and broke into the first team in 2015.
