Wrexham suffered a damaging blow to their Championship play-off hopes after Sunday's 2-0 defeat away to Birmingham City.
Phil Parkinson's side headed into the clash at St. Andrew's knowing a win would move them within touching distance of sixth-placed Hull City, but a timid performance left them four points adrift of the top six.
Wrexham struggled from kick-off against an out-of-form Birmingham, whose spirited showing belied a side that had managed just one win in their last six league games.
Arthur Okonkwo had to be alert to keep out Ibrahim Osman before the Wrexham goalkeeper rushed out to expertly deny Carlos Vicente before half-time.
But Chris Davies' hosts found their way through in the 48th minute when Kai Wagner delivered for Carlos Vicente to head home, despite Okonkwo getting a hand on the finish.
Parkinson eventually rang the changes, sending on talisman Josh Windass, but Birmingham sealed the win with 19 minutes remaining as Christoph Klarer prodded in from Seung-ho Paik's left-sided corner.

Since losing their first-ever league meeting with Wrexham in October 1979, Birmingham are now unbeaten in their last seven against them (W4 D3).
In fact, all four of Wrexham’s league defeats against Birmingham have come in their four visits to St Andrew’s, with the Red Dragons conceding 12 goals in the process.
Davies will feel this was a deserved win, having watched his side accumulate 1.55 expected goals (xG) to Wrexham's meagre 0.08 after the visitors failed to manage a shot on target all game.
And Vicente should take most of the credit – his five shots (four of those on target) were both game-leading figures, while Wagner created five chances, two more than the entire Wrexham team.
