Birmingham have been charged with failing to ensure their fans conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the Championship fixture against Aston Villa on Sunday, the Football Association has announced.
Villa midfielder Jack Grealish was punched by a fan during Sunday's 1-0 victory over the Blues at St Andrew's.
The FA statement read: 'Birmingham City FC has been charged with breaches of FA Rule E20 (a) and (b).
'It is alleged the club failed to ensure that its spectator[s] conducted themselves in an orderly fashion; refrained from improper or violent conduct and refrained from encroaching onto the pitch during the EFL Championship fixture against Aston Villa on Sunday [March 10].
'They have until March 22 to respond.'
Grealish's assailant, 27-year-old Paul Mitchell, was jailed for 14-weeks and barred from football stadiums for 10 years over the assault. Birmingham have banned him for life.
The FA have also charged both clubs for failing to control their players during the fractious derby at the weekend.
The charge relates to a rash tackle from Birmingham midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld on Grealish in the fifth minute.
Players from both sides were involved in scuffles, and the FA confirmed on Twitter that both clubs have been charged.
The charge reads: 'It is alleged they failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an orderly fashion during the fifth minute of the fixture.' Both teams have until Monday to respond to the charges.
Villa won the game 1-0, Grealish recovering from both the tackle and the fan attack to score the winning goal at St Andrew's
