Blundering VAR duo Mason and Brooks among officials summoned to emergency meeting by referees' chief

Under-fire Lee Mason and John Brooks were among the Premier League's officials who sat through a video workshop led by PGMOL chief Howard Webb on Tuesday to ensure there is no repeat of the weekend's errors.

The emergency meeting at Stockley Park, as revealed by Sportsmail on Sunday, focused on reviewing the mistakes made by Mason and Brooks.

Officials watched back video footage of the incidents from Arsenal and Brighton's 1-1 draws with Brentford and Crystal Palace respectively and discussed each in detail, according to sources.

VAR Mason had failed to check whether Christian Norgaard was offside in the build-up to Brentford's equaliser, scored by Ivan Toney.

VAR Brooks also disallowed Parvis Estupinan's goal for Brighton after wrongly drawing the offside line to James Tomkins instead of Marc Guehi.

Both errors left Arsenal and Brighton furious, given the implications they could have on their respective Premier League seasons, while Webb was understandably unhappy with the high-profile blunders.

The PGMOL told Sportsmail in a statement: 'A constructive meeting was held at Stockley Park, led by chief refereeing officer Howard Webb, to thoroughly review officiating errors in Premier League matches last weekend.

'There was a focus on error prevention and a reinforcement of best practice process with the aim of achieving accurate outcomes in an efficient manner going forward.

'We accept mistakes were made and we acted accordingly by calling a meeting and changing match official appointments where appropriate, however, we are encouraged by the way our officials have responded and are confident they will take the learnings forward, always with the aim of delivering high officiating standards for the benefit of the game.'

Referee David Coote will oversee the Carabao Cup final between Manchester United and Newcastle, it was confirmed.

Despite a screenshot circulating social media, purporting to be Coote's Facebook page showing pictures of Old Trafford, Sportsmail can confirm the image is fake.
