Jamie Redknapp believes the ongoing feud between Paul Pogba and Jose Mourinho could see them both leave Manchester United in the next year.
Mourinho was furious with Pogba's criticism of Manchester United's tactics following their draw with Wolves last weekend and told the midfielder he would not captain the club under his stewardship again.
The Frenchman said: 'When we are at home we should attack, attack, attack. That's Old Trafford. We are here to attack. I think teams are scared when they see Man United attacking and attacking. That was our mistake today.
'We were winning 1-0 so it was positive for us. Then we tried to defend a bit more against the counter-attack. We stopped playing forward like in the first half and we didn't really put them in trouble.'
Redknapp, who was speaking upon hearing news that Pogba had been dropped from the squad for Tuesday's Carabao Cup tie against Derby, said he understands the midfielder's frustrations but says airing them in public was a mistake.
Speaking live on Sky Sports, the Sportsmail columnist said: 'It’s not helpful. It’s a loaded answer. I get it, I do get it and I’m sure it’s something the players talk about in the dressing room.But I don’t think it helps. Don’t say it to the press, say it to the manager.
'The truth is, after he won the World Cup, he’s not had a rest. It’s an ideal chance to give him a rest tonight. The fact he isn’t playing tonight shouldn’t be untoward. I don’t think they will both be here next year – maybe neither!'
Pogba's form for Manchester United has been an area of concern ever since he joined the club in a record £89million deal in 2016. Redknapp believes Pogba must take some responsibility for his poor performances but says Mourinho must also look at his rival managers, who continue to get the best out of their own players.
Redknapp continued: 'I don’t think they are getting the best out of Pogba but he has to do more himself. Modern players need to look in the mirror but the manager has to take responsibility. Jurgen Klopp gets the best out of his players, Pep Guardiola gets the best from his players, but there is a lot of wasted talent here.'
Darren Bent, who sat alongside Redknapp in the Sky Sports studio, says Mourinho is only damaging Manchester United as a whole by failing to bury the hatchet with his star player.
Bent said: 'The attitude between the two I don’t quite understand. United aren’t on great form anyway and you need your best players. The manager has to take part blame for that. You want to feel loved as a player.'
