Bournemouth handed 19-year-old goalkeeper Mark Travers his first-team debut in their Premier League match against Tottenham on Saturday lunchtime.

Hailing from the Irish town of Maynooth in County Kildare, Travers has actually already received a maiden call-up to the Republic of Ireland squad.

He was selected by Mick McCarthy for their Euro 2020 qualifiers against Gibraltar and Georgia back in March, though he didn't play.

However, Travers now has the chance to impress on debut for Bournemouth, whom he joined as a 17-year-old in July 2016 following a successful trial.

Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe said pre-match: 'We rate Mark very highly. He has great character, great attitude and huge potential. This is a chance for him to show what he can do.'

A club insider said that some at the Vitality Stadium believe Travers is the best keeper on the club's books, even better than the senior players.

Changes in the goalkeeping department are expected over the summer, with a new first-choice expected to be brought in, and Travers is being given a chance to stake his claim.

He started out with Dublin-based junior club Cherry Orchard before joining the youth set-up at Irish top-flight side Shamrock Rovers in July 2015.

Initially, Travers worked with the Bournemouth under-21 squad before being promoted into the first-team squad under goalkeeping coach Neil Moss.

He spent the first half of the 2017-18 season on loan at Southern Premier League side Weymouth.

And his debut was certainly a memorable one when he scored with a chip from inside his own half to earn the Terras a 3-2 win at Bishop's Stortford.

Indeed, Travers' last game of senior club football was for Weymouth at Gosport Borough on New Year's Day 2018 in front of a crowd of just 418.

But he signed a long-term deal with Bournemouth in July 2018 and has just helped their reserves win the Central League Cup, keeping a clean sheet in the 2-0 final win over Notts County at Meadow Lane.

Now Travers has the chance to prove himself on a bigger stage as top four-chasing Tottenham come to Bournemouth.
