Brighton have expressed interest in signing free agent Danny Welbeck who was released from his contract at Watford last week.
Seagulls manager Graham Potter has been looking for an experienced forward to replace Glenn Murray who left last summer and had previously been linked with Josh King and Troy Deeney.
Welbeck, 29, first made his name at his boyhood club Manchester United before joining Arsenal in 2014.
He signed for Watford last year but was unable to prevent them from being relegated into the Championship.
Capped 42 times by England where he featured in three major tournaments Euro 2012 and the World Cups of 2014 and 2018, Welbeck’s career has nonetheless been hampered by injury, missing almost a year apiece with separate ankle and knee injuries.
However Brighton feel landing a player of his pedigree without paying a transfer fee represents good business and hope to come to a satisfactory arrangement.
The striker made 20 appearances in all competitions for the Hornets last season but could only manage three goals and one assist.
Welbeck, who has made a total of 224 appearances in the Premier League, has also previously attracted interest from Southampton and Crystal Palace.
