Arsenal target Bruno Guimaraes is on his way to meet up with Newcastle United at their pre-season camp in Spain.

The Newcastle captain left Brazil on Sunday, which is when it was widely reported he was expected to be arriving in La Manga.

However, Guimaraes is arriving at the Spain training camp on Monday in agreement with the club and he is now set to join the group.

Guimaraes told Newcastle bosses last month he wanted to move to Arsenal.

New boss Matthias Jaissle - who is set to replace Eddie Howe - is at La Manga with his new squad and wants to meet the captain.

What is the latest on Guimaraes' future at Newcastle?

Newcastle remain braced for Arsenal to make a formal approach for captain Guimaraes.

The Gunners have been exploring the conditions of a deal through intermediaries over the past few weeks.

There has still been no club-to-club contact at this stage despite reports to the contrary, which have left Newcastle puzzled.

The midfielder has told Newcastle that he wants to join the Premier League champions if they make an acceptable offer.

Newcastle want their captain to stay. The Brazil international has two years left on his contract, which includes a club-held option for an additional year.

Last week, Guimaraes called Eddie Howe the 'king of this club' following the head coach's exit.

Howe's resignation comes amid Arsenal's interest in Guimaraes, who has praised his former boss.

In an Instagram post, Guimaraes wrote the words over a picture of Howe: "King of this club!! Thanks for everything you've done for us.

"I loved enjoying our time together. Thanks for making me a better player and person! No words I can say will really say how much I enjoyed being our player. Wish you all the very best in your future, gaffer."
