AC Milan's Turkish playmaker Hakan Calhanoglu is reportedly on the brink of audaciously crossing the city divide and signing for Inter as a free agent.

Calhanoglu, 27, is approaching the end of his Milan contract and has not agreed new terms with the San Siro club.

Now, reports in Italy which have been reciprocated by Goal, state that Inter are ready to pounce and will soon acquire the midfielder on a Bosman deal.

Inter are said to be frantically searching for creative cover following the harrowing incident at Euro 2020, when playmaker Christian Eriksen suffered a cardiac arrest and collapsed on the pitch against Finland.

Eriksen - who needed to be resuscitated on the field with the use of a defibrillator - was discharged from hospital on Friday, and returned home to be with his wife and young children.

The Danish star has also been fitted with a implantable cardioverter defibrillator (ICD) to regulate his heart's rhythm, and it remains unknown whether he will continue his football playing career.

Now, Inter are in the market for new faces in hope of building upon their Serie A title victory from the previous campaign.

Calhanoglu is settled in the Italian city, and is reported to be open to the move.

Goal report that the player will undertake a remote medical in the coming days, before signing off on terms.

It is further reported that AC Milan's offer for the player to renew was £3.4million annual salary (€4m) plus a signing bonus of around £428,000 (€500,000) which they first made in January and never raised, despite Calhanoglu's hesitation to sign renewed terms.

Now, he will reportedly earn £4.3 (€5m) plus a €1m bonus at Inter.

In recent years a Premier League move with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal has been touted, though no concrete interest emerged.

The midfielder is currently away on international duty at Euro 2020, where he has featured in each of Turkey's matches.

The team, initially dubbed as potential dark horses for the competition, have lost each of their matches and remain rock bottom of Group A.
