Carragher tears into Xhaka over lack of effort for West Ham in front

Jamie Carragher hit out at Granit Xhaka's lack of effort in West Ham's opening goal on Monday night.

The Swiss midfielder has seen this season beset by controversy having appeared to tell Arsenal fans to 'f*** off' during a home match against Crystal Palace.

And Xhaka is unlikely to escape without further criticisms for his role in Angelo Ogbonna's opening goal, with Carragher accusing him of 'ducking' away from the ball.

'It always seems we have two or three fall guys we attack, some might say it’s bullying, and we always pick out Davis Luiz,' Carragher, dissecting the play at half-time, said.

'But (Granit) Xhaka here (for the goal) is shocking. He just ducks out of it.'

When pressed by host Dave Jones if the criticism was overtly harsh on Xhaka given the ground he had to make up, Carragher issued another stinging reply.

'He may not have got there but do more than that,' he said. 'Hit his body, hit his shoulder, just do something.'

Xhaka was close to making another calamitous mistake early in the second half when he gave the ball away deep in his own half, drawing bemusement from former Arsenal striker Alan Smith, who was on commentary for the game.

'It is a classic Granit Xhaka moment,' he said. 'So lazy.'
