Michael Carrick has played alongside some huge names in football during his career but the ex-midfielder insists there is only one player who tops the list.

The 37-year-old has played with the likes of Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs during his time at Old Trafford but it was Paul Scholes who he believes was the best team-mate he's ever played with.

Carrick played alongside Scholes in the midfield for a number of years where they won five Premier League titles, the Champions League and a FIFA Club World Cup trophy together.

When asked who the best team-mate he's ever had was, he told the Mirror: 'I always say Scholesy because he was right next to me and, as a partnership, he was fantastic to play with.

'We had some incredible players, amazing, but I always go back to Scholesy.'

The Newcastle-born midfielder began his career at West Ham before moving on to Tottenham in 2004 for two years.

After making his £18.6million move to Old Trafford, it wasn't long before he started to win trophies under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Carrick had already won the Champions League in 2008 season with United and was on course to winning it again in 2009 when they came up against Barcelona in Rome.

Lionel Messi and Co went on to win 2-0, cementing themselves as one of the best teams of all time.

And Carrick reveals that the midfield of Xavi, Sergio Busquets and Andres Iniesta along with Messi was the best opponent he's faced.

'Messi is up there,' Carrick said when asked who his best-ever opponent was. 'Seedorf when he played for Milan. But that Barcelonamidfield of Busquets, Iniesta, Xavi with Messi… It doesn't get much better than that as a group.'
