Celtic 3-1 Hearts: Maeda and Osmand complete title-winning turnaround

  /  autty

Daizen Maeda and Callum Osmand were Celtic's heroes as Martin O'Neill's team came from behind to beat Hearts 3-1 and clinch the Scottish Premiership title.

For so long this campaign, Hearts have led the way, but Kelechi Iheanacho's controversial winner against Motherwell in midweek teed up a title showdown with the Hoops at Celtic Park.

And it duly delivered the drama.

Derek McInnes' team went ahead through captain Lawrence Shankland in the 43rd minute, with the forward heading home emphatically from Stephen Kingsley's corner.

Yet Celtic were once again the beneficiaries of a contentious call soon after, as Alexandros Kyziridis was penalised for handball.

Arne Engels squeezed his penalty under Alexander Schwolow, sending the teams in at half-time on level pegging.

Buoyed on by a raucous sea of green in the stands, Celtic piled on the pressure throughout the second half, with Iheanacho striking the woodwork and Osmand missing a couple of chances.

But in the 87th minute, the pressure finally told, as Osmond got in behind and squared it for Maeda to finish.

The goal was initially disallowed for offside, but the VAR review proved Osmand had timed his run to perfection.

And as Hearts searched desperately for an equaliser that would have clinched top spot, Celtic cleared a free-kick, and Osmand charged forward to finish into an open goal, causing bedlam as the home fans charged onto the field to celebrate a fifth straight league title.

Data Debrief: Hearts break at the death

Hearts have been top this season for 250 days. They were aiming to win their fifth title, and their first since 1960. They would have been the first non-Old Firm team to win the crown since Alex Ferguson's Aberdeen back in 1985.

Yet the monopoly Celtic and Rangers have on this competition has stretched to 41 years.

The game turned on that penalty decision, which seemed harsh. Celtic have won five penalties via handballs in the Scottish Premiership this season, two more than any other side.

But then Hearts did not do enough to stamp their authority back on the game after the break, and Celtic finished with 2.82 expected goals to their visitors' 0.96.
