Celtic are lining up a cut-price deal to sign Manchester City winger Brandon Barker.

Neil Lennon took the wide man on a successful loan spell from the Etihad during his time as Hibernian manager.

And Lennon now wants to offer the 22-year-old a return to the SPFL Premiership after he ended a frustrating year at Preston North End in May.

With 12 months left on his £16,000-per-week deal at the Etihad, Manchester City are likely to cut their losses this summer.

And, with lingering doubts over the Parkhead future of Scott Sinclair as he enters the final year of his contract, Barker is a player Lennon knows and admires.

Scotland's champions launched an internal investigation on Monday night after plans for a summer squad rebuild leaked on the internet. Documents from a first team recruitment meeting on April 2 showed an 'Actions Update' for key positions in the Parkhead squad.

Compiled before former head of recruitment Lee Congerton left the club for Leicester City some names on the list had already entered the public domain. Others, such as Motherwell's £3million rated David Turnbull and Ipswich Town's teenage right-back Dylan Crowe, have been added since.

As Sportsmail first revealed Bournemouth's Lys Mousset is the top target to strengthen the striker area. With the English Premier League side rejecting attempts to offer the likes of Olivier Ntcham as makeweights in a deal, however, Celtic will have to shatter their £9million transfer fee with a straight cash transaction to fight off rival interest from Ligue One in France.

The Parkhead side have also been linked with a loan move for Chelsea central defender Fikayo Tomori.

With interest from the German Bundesliga, however, the 21-year-old is expected to leave Stamford Bridge permanently for a fee in excess of £10million this summer.

Free agent midfielders Rekeem Harper of West Bromwich Albion and Joe Aribo of Charlton are also Celtic targets.
