Celtic not good enough to dream of Scottish Cup send-off, says O'Neill

Martin O'Neill believes Celtic are not good enough for him to dream of ending his tenure as interim manager by winning the Scottish Cup.

Celtic face St. Mirren in the semi-final on Sunday, hoping to inflict defeat on their opponents after losing the Scottish League Cup final to them earlier in the season.

The Bhoys did defeat St. Mirren last week in the Scottish Premiership, where O'Neill's side are three points off league leaders Hearts, who Celtic face on the final day of the season.

Celtic are in good form, losing just one of their last eight games across all competitions (W5 D2), reviving their chances of ending the campaign with some silverware.

However, O'Neill insisted his side are in no position to be thinking beyond their semi-final clash against St. Mirren.

"I don't think we are good enough to dream that far," said O'Neill when asked about the prospect of winning the cup to end his interim reign.

"It's a great competition with a lot of history, and I'd like to be a part of that.

"It would be lovely if we could do it, but St. Mirren will take great confidence from the fact that they won the last time at Hampden, and did very well last week.

"But we're going all out to try and win the game.

"If we can win the game, it would definitely have a positive effect going into the rest of the season."

O'Neill has plenty of experience in the competition, lifting the Scottish Cup three times during his first spell with Celtic.

The winner of the tie will face Dunfermline in the final, after they defeated Falkirk 4-2 on penalties after a goalless 120 minutes.
