A 10th-minute goal from Bruno Martins Indi gave Stoke City the ideal start at home to Bolton Wanderers.
The Dutch defender rose to power home Tom Ince’s inviting cross at the bet365 Stadium.
It was the first League meeting between the clubs since a 2-2 draw on the final day of the 2011-12 Premier League season, which saw Wanderers relegated after 11 years in the top flight.
Ince had a free-kick turned away by Bolton goalkeeper Remi Matthews early in the second half.
Josh Magennis believed he had equalised following a corner, but it was disallowed for a foul and Ince made the points safe when his low drive in the 74th minute made it 2-0.
At the DW Stadium, Wigan’s Christian Walton was the busier goalkeeper, pulling off a number of fine saves in the first half to deny Swansea. Wigan had gone into the game unbeaten in their previous 12 home matches but the Swans looked the more likely side to take the lead.
Will Grigg’s big chance to snatch the points for Wigan came with 10 minutes left but Kristoffer Nordfeldt saved.
