Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has opened up about his long-standing affection for Nigeria’s national team, revealing that his connection with the three-time African champions predates his appointment by decades.

“When I took this job, I was a fan of the Super Eagles, since France 1998. I bought the jersey and travelled to watch the games,” Chelle said, offering a personal glimpse into a journey that has now come full circle.

The coach also reserved special praise for Alex Iwobi, highlighting the midfielder’s intelligence and influence on the pitch. “Alex Iwobi has a very high IQ. He smells football… I’m so proud of him,” Chelle noted, underlining the Arsenal academy graduate’s importance to his tactical plans.

Iwobi, one of the most experienced figures in the current squad, has often been a creative hub for Nigeria, linking midfield and attack with his vision and work rate. Chelle’s words reflect the growing responsibility placed on the 29-year-old as the team balances star power with emerging talents.

The coach, however, also touched on Iwobi’s life away from the pitch, particularly his growing presence on YouTube. With a light-hearted tone, Chelle suggested moderation. “As for his YouTube channel, sometimes he needs to think about other things. It’s an outlet for him and the players,” he added, acknowledging the platform as a way for players to relax and express themselves beyond football.

Chelle’s comments paint the picture of a coach who not only understands the modern footballer but also carries a deep emotional connection to the green and white shirt. As Nigeria continue their campaign, that blend of nostalgia, respect for talent, and man-management could prove crucial in driving the Super Eagles toward their next success.
