Chelsea defender Malang Sarr joins Porto on season-long loan deal

Porto have announced the loan signing of Chelsea defender Malang Sarr with the Portuguese transfer window closing later today.

Sarr only joined the Blues at the end of August from French side Nice on a five-year deal but with first-team opportunities unlikely this season, the 21-year-old has been sent out on loan.

Porto are the beneficiaries, with Sarr signing on a season-long loan deal and the club announcing the move on Tuesday evening - a day after the international transfer window closed, but the Portuguese window is open until midnight UK time.

Left back Emerson was also reportedly interesting Porto, but he is still currently a Chelsea player.

After spending over £230m on new arrivals, including Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Edouard Mendy, Thiago Silva (free) and Sarr (free), Chelsea's attentions then turned to trying to offload players in the summer market.

A host of potential suitors were reportedly interested in taking Sarr on for the season, with Saint-Etienne, Genoa and Sampdoria all linked with moves.

The 21-year-old impressed with his boyhood club in France, having made 119 appearances for the club, and earned his move to Chelsea on a free transfer.

Chelsea were looking to offload the likes of Danny Drinkwater, Antonio Rudiger, Marcos Alonso and Victor Moses but their plans failed to come to fruition.

Only Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Tiemoue Bakayoko were sent out on loan to Fulham and Napoli respectively.

The Blues were scrambling to get rid of their deadwood during deadline day on Monday, with plenty of players having fallen out of favour under Frank Lampard.
