Chelsea sign Diego Moreira but fans are puzzled by youngster with 2 appearances

Chelsea have announced the signing of Benfica's little-known Diego Moreira, the second arrival of a busy day for the Blues.

The 18-year-old winger has made two senior appearances for the Portuguese outfit since the end of the 2021/22 season, but featured regularly for Benfica B.

It follows the addition of Norwich youngster Alex Matos, who joined on a free transfer and can operate in a variety of midfield or forward positions.

Mail Sport's Simon Jones had his finger on the pulse in April when he revealed in Transfer Confidential that Chelsea had put in place a deal to sign Moreira on a free transfer.

But many fans have understandably been left puzzled by the signing of the youngster, with plenty wondering who on earth he is.

One fan commented: 'Who is this random guy?'

Another said: 'Chesea left me speechless, what kind of signing is this..!'

Moreira first appeared for the Benfica first team in May 2022, when he came on as a lively figure in a 2-0 league win at Pacos Ferreira.

He added further minutes to his tally last August when he entered the fray against Midtjylland in a Champions League qualifier.

For Benfica B, who play in the second tier of Portuguese football, he scored four and assisted four in 29 matches this campaign.

In 2022, he notched two assists in the final of the UEFA Youth League in a 6-0 rout over Red Bull Salzburg.

He is currently on assignment at the European Under-21 Championship with Portugal, where he has made two substitute appearances.

Incidentally, Portugal lock horns with Lee Carsley's England in the quarter-finals tomorrow night, so there could be a chance to glimpse him in action.
