Clive Tyldesley's analyses his work on Liverpool's 2005 Champions League win

For many years Clive Tyldesley was the voice of the Champions League finals when they they were screened on ITV.

There was a good reason for it too, he was near faultless when it came to guiding fans through the matches and capturing the magic moments of any contest.

Manchester United supporters will never forget his short sharp quip of 'and Solskjaer has won it' following their side's dramatic stoppage time victory over Bayern Munich in 1999 to secure the treble.

And now the 65-year-old, who was recently 'sacked' as ITV's lead commentator has let fans on his secret to his success after playing back Liverpool's stunning Champions League win over AC Milan in 2005.

Tyldesley revealed on Twitter his best way of learning on the job was to rewatch past games to see if he would change anything if he had the opportunity.

Using the start of Liverpool's comeback from 3-0 down against Milan in Istanbul, he took Steven Gerrard's headed goal to make it 3-1 as an example, where he muttered the words 'hello, here we go...' as an example to go on.

So would he change any of it?

'Well, there is nothing i would change about that moment (Gerrard goal) though I have no idea why I said "here we go",' he said. 'Maybe it was the gathering sense of fate about the way Liverpool reached the final that year.

'The three-goal comeback in the final group game, the underdog victory against Juventus and the ghost goal against Chelsea in the semi-final, maybe there was a sense of fate gathering.'

Tyldesley then explained how his utterances following Gerrard's goal were elements that he wished he could alter.

'What I am trying to do now is gather thoughts, and not very well and I'm reaching and stretching for words. I really should have stopped talking long before now because when the replay starts that's when you should be listening to Andy Townsend's analysis of the goal.

'What am am I doing when Andy's talking? Well I'm watching the pictures and trying to gather my thoughts on what this means. Liverpool were totally outplayed in the first half, have they got a chance of coming back here? I have to make that call when Andy's finished.'

Tyldesley then allows the replay to continue where on the night he can be heard saying 'you never know with Liverpool'. After that moment he pauses the footage and with a cheeky smile says 'would I change that moment? Not now.'

Gerrard's goal was the first of three for the Reds in six mad minutes that saw them draw level in the match.

After the game ended 3-3 after extra-time, Rafa Benitez's side triumphed on penalties to win a fifth Champions League title.

Tyldesley's voice has provided the backdrop to historic matches over more than two decades at major international tournaments and the biggest games in club football, including 17 Champions League finals.

ITV announced that the 65-year-old he will be replaced by 42-year-old Sam Matterface from the start of the new season.
