Confident Man United fans back new boss Erik ten Hag to restore the club to its former glory

Manchester United fans have reacted with joy after the club confirmed Erik ten Hag as their new manager – and have urged him to get rid of captain Harry Maguire as his first port of call.

United officially confirmed the Dutchman as their new boss on Thursday and will take over from interim boss Ralf Rangnick at the end of the season.

The 52-year-old agreed a three-year deal to become the new Red Devils boss and the news has left United fans full of hope following his appointment, with many urging the Old Trafford club to back him once he begins his new role.

And a number of over-zealous fans confidently claimed that Pep Guardiola is no longer the best manager in Manchester.

One excited fan tweeted: 'PEP IS NO LONGER THE BEST MANAGER IN MANCHESTER'.

Another fan also made comparisons between Guardiola and Ten Hag, mainly for their lack of hair.

They tweeted: 'WE HAVE OUR VERY OWN BALD GENIUS'.

One cautious United supporter urged the club not to 'f*** it up', given they have been through a number of managers since Sir Alex Ferguson retired in 2013 and not won a Premier League title.

The Dutchman's appointment has been expected for some time since Sportsmail revealed a month ago that he had been interviewed for the job having moved ahead of Paris Saint-Germain boss Mauricio Pochettino.

Ten Hag said: 'It is a great honour to be appointed manager of Manchester United and I am hugely excited by the challenge ahead.

'I know the history of this great club and the passion of the fans, and I am absolutely determined to develop a team capable of delivering the success they deserve.

'It will be difficult to leave Ajax after these incredible years, and I can assure our fans of my complete commitment and focus on bringing this season to a successful conclusion before I move to Manchester United.'
