Gareth Southgate did not rule out the possibility of England selecting Mason Greenwood in the future, as he bizarrely appeared to leave the door open for the axed Manchester United star on Thursday.
Manchester United confirmed Greenwood would never play for the club again after completing a six-month internal investigation into his dropped criminal charges earlier this month.
Greenwood, who was arrested and charged with attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour in January 2022, is now planning his future away from Old Trafford in a move that will most likely take him abroad.
When asked about the 21-year-old's future with England, Southgate insisted the case is 'very complex', failing to rule out his potential return in the future.
'It’s clearly a very complex case,' he said after announcing his squad for the September internationals on Thursday.
'He’s not playing so it’s not a consideration for us. It’s hypothetical. Whatever I say will be used in a less nuanced fashion frankly.'
