Crystal Palace confirm Wales goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey has left the club after seven years

Crystal Palace have confirmed goalkeeper Wayne Hennessey has left the club, bringing a seven-year spell at Selhurst Park to an end.

The 34-year-old joined the south London club from Wolves in 2014 and went on to make 132 appearances for the club, keeping 37 clean sheets in the process.

But after making just one senior appearance for Palace in 2020-21 - a second-round League Cup defeat by Bournemouth on penalties - the Wales international has departed on a free transfer.

Palace have acted swiftly in replacing Hennessey, signing former Sunderland and Bolton keeper Remi Matthews in his place.

A club statement on Hennessey said: 'Everyone at the club would like to thank Wayne for his contribution, and wish him the very best for the future.'

Meanwhile, speaking about Matthews signing on a two-year deal, Palace chairman Steve Parish said: 'Remi brings plenty of Football League experience with him, and we are really pleased to add him to our goalkeeping ranks.'

Matthews also added: 'I can't wait to get started. I'm excited to work with Dean Kiely again because he helps me improve, and I've got two great goalkeepers to look up to in Vicente Guaita and Jack Butland.

'It's great to be a part of it, and I'm really looking forward to it.'

Hennessey meanwhile becomes the first player alongside fellow goalkeeper Stephen Henderson whose departure has been made official since appointing Patrick Vieira to succeed Roy Hodgson.

And it ends a frustrating year for Hennessey, who was behind No 1 keeper Vicente Guaita and No 2 Jack Butland in the pecking order in the former Liverpool and England boss' final season in charge at Selhurst Park.

Hennessey was also called up by Wales for their Euro 2020 campaign but was on the bench for all four games, with Leicester goalkeeper Danny Ward getting the nod from Robert Page.

The 34-year-old however remains his country's most capped shotstopper of all time, a record he achieved while at Palace having made 96 appearances since his senior debut in 2007, four ahead of Neville Southall.

Palace have also registered their first arrival since Arsenal legend Vieira became their new boss following the £8million signing of exciting Reading midfielder Michael Olise.

A number of Premier League sides expressed an interest but Palace advanced quickly to make him the first signing of Vieira's era, just four days into his reign, and Olise has signed a five-year contract.

Reports this week suggest Vieira is also looking to his former club to sign Eddie Nketiah while Nice star Kasper Dolberg is also a target.

Meanwhile, The Telegraph reported last week that West Brom centre back Kyle Bartley is an option for both Palace and Newcastle this summer.

The 30-year-old, who has a year left on his contract at the Hawthorns, is available for around £3m, and Palace are in desperate need for players having not yet agreed new deals with many of their out-of-contract players.
