Danny Simpson hilariously explains how Cristiano Ronaldo saved his 'tough' date with Miss California

Danny Simpson has revealed how Cristiano Ronaldo's intervention helped him on a date with Miss California during a pre-season tour of America with Leicester.

Simpson was part of Leicester's 2016 Premier League title-winning team and was part of the club's pre-season tour of USA in the same year.

However, while all attention should have been on the pitch, Simpson explained how he slipped away from the team hotel to go for a romantic meal with the supermodel.

Simpson was at Manchester United during the same time as Ronaldo's first stint at the club and was caught unawares by the Portuguese who helped save the date after a difficult start to dinner.

Re-telling the story of his chance meeting with the superstar winger at a steak restaurant in glitzy Los Angeles, Simpson told the UndrTheCosh podcast:  'We went to LA on a pre-season tour, playing against PSG, we were thinking 'what are we doing here' we normally go Dublin and we're now in LA.

'I picked a specific day and thought right I'm sneaking out and snuck out the [team] hotel, got all my gear on, got picked up and was on my way to this steak restaurant.

'I meet Miss California, sat having dinner with her and I swear to god it was going w***,' he said.

'It was painful right, but anyway it weren't going great and I got a little tap on my shoulder. I've looked up and it's only (Cristiano) Ronaldo. He's gone 'Simmo' and I've gone 'Ronny!'

'I've got up and given him a little hug and that. Anyway we had a little chat because we're obviously in pre-season and he's won the Euros (with Portugal) so he's on an extended break, added Simpson.

'I've sat back down and she's gone 'how do you know Ronaldo?'

'I've played it down and said 'I used to play with him' like it was nothing. From that second she completely changed.'

'Honestly it was literally a complete different person all because Ronaldo said hello to me so cheers Ronny,' finished Simpson.

Miss California may not have fully-known who Salford-born Simpson was but clearly had an idea who Ronaldo was given his huge 554m Instagram following.

He concluded how the woman's change in attitude after realising Ronaldo and Simpson were friends made him 'lose respect' for her, but admitted it was a great story to tell his Leicester team-mates in training the next day.

Simpson made eight appearances for Man United in the 2007/08 season before being sold to Newcastle in 2010 after a successful loan spell at the Magpies.

He retired last year after mutually agreeing to terminate his contract with Championship side Bristol City.
