Matteo Darmian revealed he is leaving Manchester United in a bid to bolster his chances of making it back into the Italy team.

The 29-year-old is on the verge of joining Serie A side Parma in a deal worth €1.5million having not featured for United at all at the beginning of this season.

Darmian has not played for his country since October 2017.

“I'm happy to be back home, it's an important opportunity," Darmian said upon touching down in his home country. “It's certainly an important opportunity to get back into the Italy team."

Darmian will become the fourth United player to have left the club for Serie A this month after Romelu Lukaku, Alexis Sanchez and Chris Smalling all made the move to Italy.

The former Torino man will come up against Lukaku and Sanchez when Parma travel to Inter Milan at the end of October and Darmian is predicting his former teammates to achieve success for the Nerazzurri.

“They are strong players and I wish them all the best," Darmian said. "I'm sure they will have a great season.”
