Harry Maguire was the target of boos from England fans during Tuesday's 3-0 win over Ivory Coast at Wembley.

Boss Gareth Southgate labelled the jeering of the out-of-form Manchester United defender as an 'absolute joke' but Maguire is not alone in being taunted while wearing the national team jersey.

Sportsmail looks at six other England stars who have been booed by the Three Lions fans...

JOHN BARNES (1993)

England made hard work of it despite beating San Marino 6-0 and supporters subjected John Barnes to boos.

'There was some stuff about me in the newspapers beforehand and fans will have a go at players,' he said. 'It was tough.'

DAVID BECKHAM (1998)

Subjected to taunts and a national witch-hunt after his World Cup red card against Argentina.

An effigy of Beckham was hanged outside a Croydon pub, he was labelled a 'stupid boy' on the back pages and booed at matches - though Manchester United fans were vocal in their support.

FRANK LAMPARD (2007)

Booed during a friendly against Brazil for simply having a bad game.

'This time last year I had just won their player of the year twice on the spin and now this… that's just how English football is,' he said. 'It's not helpful, it is upsetting.'

ASHLEY COLE (2009)

Admitted being booed by England fans 'hurt', adding: 'In football you are loved one day and hated the next.' He was taunted following off-the-pitch incidents.

WAYNE ROONEY (2010)

Following an underwhelming World Cup draw with Algeria in Cape Town, Rooney looked into a TV camera and remarked: 'It's nice to see your own fans booing you, loyal supporters.' He was forced to apologise.

In 2016 Rooney was also booed for a poor performance in Gareth Southgate's first match in charge.

JOE GOMEZ (2019)

After an in-squad bust-up with Raheem Sterling, Gomez was said to be 'devastated' by the booing witnessed by his fiancee and baby son in the crowd.
