De Gea stock remains high in Spain after Wembley heroics

Real Madrid might have given up on ever signing David De Gea but there is still a lot of love for the Manchester United goalkeeper.

Marca dedicated a page to his performance on Sunday in its Monday editions telling how he had: 'given a master performance in the cathedral of football'.

It's now been over three years since Real Madrid's move for David de Gea fell apart on deadline day.

Real Madrid president Florentino Perez chose not to pay his €40million (£35m) asking price hoping to get the keeper for free when his contract ran out the following year but De Gea signed a new deal at United and his price shot up to €100m (£89m).

There were several more dalliances along the way but Madrid eventually opted for Thibaut Courtois and his six-season contract means there will be no more bids for De Gea.

Madrid currently have Keylor Navas deputising for the injured Courtois and 19-year-old Ukraine keeper Andriy Lunin will eventually comeback from his loan spell at Leganes to be the Belgian's long-term number two.

De Gea remains many Madrid fans preference for the Spain number 1 jersey lost recently to Chelsea's Kepa Arrizabalaga and the delight at his stunning 11-save show on Sunday will only serve to increase that.
